Estonia Society, founded in 1865, is a phenomenon in the history of Estonians. In 1906, the society became the basis for the professional theatre. On the society’s initiative, Estonian National Opera House and Concert Hall was built, designed by Finnish architects Armas Lindgren and Wivi Lönn. The inauguration ceremony was held on 24 August 1913, before the Republic of Estonia was born. This building has become a temple of culture that at various times has been the symbol of Estonian culture, state and independence. In 1919 the society established Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Today, Estonia Society has a noble aim to draw public attention to different spheres of culture, to maintain and support Estonian culture as a whole.
