EDUCATION AND WORK
Gyula Harangozó graduated cum laude from the Hungarian State Ballet Academy’s Secondary School and the Moscow State Ballet Academy (the class of Alexander Prokofiev). A contract at the Opera House awaited him on his return to Hungary, and he was soon dancing leading roles before being nominated as a soloist a few years later. He was a member of the Hungarian National Ballet in 1976–77, promoted soloist in 1977 and principal dancer in 1978. In 1981–1991, he was a first principal dancer of the Vienna State Opera and Ballet while simultaneously dancing as a guest principal dancer in the Bavarian State Opera and Ballet. Gyula Harangozó was the Artistic Director of the Ballet Troupe of the Budapest Opera in 1995–2005. In 2005–2010, he was the Ballet Director of Staatsoper Wien and Volksoper Wien, as well as the Artistic Director of the Vienna State Opera Ballet School. In 2013–2021, he was the Artistic Director of the Szeged Summer Festival in Hungary. He has been crucial in the build-up of the new structuring of the Ballet of the Wiener Staatsoper and Volksoper, where the two ballet ensembles have been merged to be called Ballett der Wiener Staatsoper und Volksoper. As a guest performer he appeared on almost all the noteworthy ballet stages of the world and travelled around the globe: New York Metropolitan Opera with the American Ballet Theatre, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, La Scala in Milan among others. 

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Gyula Harangozó has received numerous awards, including the Award of the Best Juvenile Dancer at the 3rd Moscow International Ballet Competition (1977), Gold medal as Best Male Dancer at the 2nd Tokyo International Ballet Competition (1978), Dancer of the Year (1981, Hungary), Artist of the Year (1983, Germany), Hungarian Order of Merit Officer’s Cross (2000), the title “Esteemed Artist of the Hungarian Republic” (2004), EuroPas Dance Award (2009), Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art (2010), Kossuth Award of the Hungarian Republic (2012), he was named an Honorary Professor of the Hungarian Dance Academy in 2015 and an Honorary Professor of the Hungarian Dance University in 2021. In the same year he received the title of Master Artist and Eternal Member of the Hungarian State Opera House.
