The traditional beloved Estonian National Opera Christmas Concert features Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Coronation Mass” (Krönungsmesse) in C Major KV 317, Georg Friedrich Händel’s “Zadok the Priest” HWV 258, “Hallelujah” chorus from his oratorio “Messiah” HWV 56, and popular Christmas carols.
Mozart’s “Coronation Mass” is one of the composer’s best-known and most festive sacred works. The Mass was composed in 1779 in Salzburg, where Mozart served as court organist and composer to Archbishop Count Colloredo. The nickname “Coronation Mass” originated in the 19th century, when the work was frequently performed at solemn ceremonies, including coronations and other grand church festivities.
Musically, the work combines classical clarity and elegance with dramatic, opera-like elements characteristic of Mozart’s style – the soprano solo in the Agnus Dei recalls Countess Almaviva’s aria “Dove sono” from the opera “The Marriage of Figaro” (1786). The Mass is written for soloists, choir, and orchestra, and consists of the six traditional sections (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei). Distinguished by its radiant and festive character, the “Coronation Mass” remains one of the most frequently performed of Mozart’s 17 Masses, heard regularly both in concert halls and at church celebrations.
“Zadok the Priest,” composed by Händel in 1727, is one of his most famous coronation anthems. Written for the crowning of King George II of Great Britain, it sets a biblical text describing the anointing of Solomon as king. The piece is renowned for its dramatic orchestral buildup and powerful choral entry, symbolising majesty and divine authority. It has been performed at every British coronation since its creation, making it a cornerstone of ceremonial music.
